Emergency Department Registered Nurse – Patient Flow Coordinator

Pay Range: $33 - $59 /hour. Employee benefits include, but are not limited to, health insurance (medical, dental, vision), 401(k) plan, and paid sick leave (depending on work location).
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Flow & Throughput Management
- Oversee patient flow throughout the ED including triage, waiting areas, patient rooms, fast track, pediatrics, and behavioral health.
- Act as a liaison between Bed Management, physicians, nursing staff, ancillary services, EMS, and case management to ensure timely patient placement.
- Maintain real-time oversight of the ED tracking board to monitor throughput.
- Coordinate patient movement into and out of the department efficiently.
- Provide regular throughput performance feedback through huddles, debriefings, and reports.
- Leadership & Operations
- Lead staffing, shift operations, and departmental workflow.
- Ensure compliance with departmental policies, regulatory requirements, and safety standards.
- Contribute to the department’s strategic goals and operational priorities.
- Provide leadership recommendations supported by data-driven decisions.
- Promote staff engagement and support performance improvement behaviors.
- Quality & Performance Improvement
- Evaluate the quality and appropriateness of ED care delivery processes.
- Participate in quality initiatives, performance improvement projects, and committees.
- Recommend and implement policy or procedural changes based on identified needs.
- Assure all actions support patient safety, ethical care, regulatory compliance, and service excellence.
- Communication & Collaboration
- Partner effectively with multidisciplinary teams to optimize care delivery.
- Interact with patients and families to ensure respect for rights, expectations, and preferences.
- Provide objective staff performance feedback to ED leadership.
- Support emergency preparedness efforts (mitigation, response, and recovery).
- Additional Duties
- Serve as a resource for staff and providers on patient flow principles.
- Uphold all organizational policies and standards of work.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Key Requirements and Technology Experience:
- Strong critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities (verbal and written)
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams
- Skilled in prioritization, leadership, and patient flow coordination
- Strong analytical abilities to evaluate clinical and operational challenges
- Ability to lead staff with competence, credibility, and confidence
- Demonstrated team-focused, patient-centered approach
- Ability to stay composed and decisive in a fast-paced ED environment
- Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred
- Licensure & Certifications (required upon hire):
- Active RN License (Single-State or Compact)
- BLS (American Heart Association or American Red Cross)
- Minimum 3 years of nursing experience in an Emergency Department
